:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from CC Guttry -- A little disappointed.... : I have loved the Meg Langslow mysteries since the first one came out. I've read them over and over and can't wait to read each new one. And while I did like the Twelve Jays of Christmas I have to admit that I was just a little disappointed this time. I guessed the murderer's identity as soon as the character was introduced. No I won't ruin the ending by telling who it is but I'll bet most fans of the series will be able to guess it right away like I did. I can say it was still a fun book to read as usual and I enjoyed all the little ins and outs and twists and especially all the puns. But being sure I knew who the bad guy was all along just kind of made it not quite as fun. It's not a big deal and I still rated it 5 stars but I hope the next one isn't quite so obvious. Of course I'll still count the days until it comes out and have pre-ordered it already. I highly recommend every book in this series!! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lois Fisher -- Delightful, Zany Meg Langslow Mystery! : Where to start? Meg Langslow has hurt her ankle. A few dozen relatives are spending Christmas at her house. Unfortunately, so is the dreadful artist, Roderick Castlemayne, who is painting birds for Meg's crazed grandfather. Oh, yeah, there are mockingbirds and bluejays dive bombing all the relatives. Meg has to slog through all this, including the snow storms (which always occur in Ms. Andrews' laugh-filled Christmas tales), and trying to maintain some order in the house. Oh, there are wombats in the basement, courtesy of the crazed grandfather. There's a murder. Meg needs to solve it. Well, the police should, but she's so nosy! And clever and funny! I think that if I went back through the story, I could come up with either people or animals or something to fill in the “The 12 Days of Christmas.” After all, 7 Pomeranians! How many mockingbirds? - 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Very Good Read But NotT Her Best : I’ve read all 31 as they came out. Twelve Jays has some delightful moments, and is very easy to read. However, as with the last four ir five, I knew who would be murdered and who did it very early. Lately Ms. Andrews victims are so unlikeable I hope they die quickly. Meg’s family are always fun but at age 50, why hasn’t she learned to say no? I hope 32 takes us to Ribs wedding, whence this series began. Since her father was 66 in Peacocks, and Spike at least 7, 18 years have past. Since we don’t want to lose thrn, I hope the author fills missing periods in the past instead of aging them out. Every year I read all the Donna Andrews Christmas mysteries to help get me in a happy holiday mood. This goes to pride of place. The murdered victim in the library, the annual family party, the small town vibe - all come together in a page turner with a most satisfying ending. Learning about wombats is just one of the fun bits, and going through the zoo with Meg had a lot of info and, of course, tension as she was hiding from the killer. The villain turned out to be who I thought. Two reasons for suspecting him: a) he was too meek and mild to be real, and b) in spite of feeling sorry for him I just didn’t like him!
